Dominic Bell
Dominic Bell strictly uses only one camera: the Hasselblad 500c. He collects wave water from the sea, just before the wave breaks in a large trough. The water is then stored in large freezers over extensive periods of time. Upon creation of the man-made nature object, the samples are distressed, smashed and sculpted to re-investigate the sublime in the contemporary seascape. In some ‘towel pieces’, wave ice is stuck to the fabric of towels for short periods of time and the nature of the photograph supersedes the original object, exploring the theory of photograph as object.
Edward Weston, Tacita Dean, Robert Smithson, Ori Gersht are all influences.
